I'm Chris McCarthy. I have been photographing dogs at outdoor locations across the South Shore and Greater Boston for over a decade. I know which parks work for reactive dogs, which beaches are best at sunrise, and which trails are empty enough for anxious dogs to breathe.

How I Pick Your Session Location
The right location is the one that fits your dog, not the one that fits a portfolio. Three things drive the decision before we ever pick a town.
Your Dog's Temperament
Reactive, nervous, or shy dogs need quiet trails with low foot traffic — Norwell, the back end of Wompatuck, the conservation paths in Hanover. Confident dogs handle popular beaches at golden hour. The location is chosen around the dog, not the dog around the location.
Tide, Light, and Season
Duxbury Beach is unrecognizable at high tide vs low. Scituate Harbor at sunrise has the soft warm light most beach photos miss. Wildflower meadows in Norwell have a six-week peak window. Beach access rules in Hingham, Cohasset, and Hull change with the season. I track all of this so you don't have to.
Distance vs Setting
Sessions at the Rockland studio or within 5 miles carry no travel fee. Anything further is one flat $50 fee — Plymouth, Boston, or beyond. Many clients choose closer for senior dogs and farther for once-in-a-lifetime locations. We discuss the tradeoff up front so the choice is yours, not the calendar's.

Location FAQ
Where do sessions take place?
Sessions take place at outdoor locations on the South Shore and Greater Boston area — beaches, parks, conservation land, harbors, and backyards. We choose the location based on your dog's temperament and what will produce the best portraits for them specifically. If your dog has a favorite spot they already know, that is usually our first choice.
Is there a travel fee?
Sessions at the Rockland studio or within 5 miles carry no travel fee. For any session more than 5 miles from the studio, a $50 flat travel fee applies — one charge regardless of how far. That covers the full South Shore, Greater Boston, and beyond.
My town is not listed. Do you still come to me?
Probably yes. The towns below are the ones with dedicated pages, but I travel throughout the South Shore and Greater Boston. A $50 travel fee applies for sessions more than 5 miles from the Rockland studio. If you are more than 30 miles out, reach out — I often travel farther for memory sessions and will discuss options.
Which town has the best locations for dog photography?
It depends entirely on your dog. Scituate has the most photographic variety per square mile — beaches, harbor, farmland, conservation land all within a few miles. Duxbury has the most dramatic beach photography. Hingham's World's End is the most iconic single location. Norwell has the most privacy and least foot traffic. I know all of them well and will recommend the right one for your specific dog.

About the Author
Chris McCarthyProfessional Dog Photographer · Rockland, MA · 11+ years experience
I've photographed hundreds of dogs across the South Shore and Greater Boston since 2014 — every breed, size, age, and temperament. My own rescue, Sully, was reactive and anxious when I got him, and working with him every day taught me how to photograph dogs that other photographers find difficult. I specialize in reactive and shy dogs, seniors, and memory sessions — the sessions that matter most and need the most patience.
