Dog Photographer in Hull, MA

Last updated

Nantasket Beach is the only South Shore location where Boston Harbor islands appear in the portrait background. That's a backdrop no other beach on the coast can offer.

I'm Chris McCarthy, a professional dog photographer based in Rockland. I've been photographing dogs at Nantasket, Sunset Point, and Pemberton Point since 2014. All temperaments welcome.

Where We Photograph in Hull

Hull is a narrow peninsula surrounded by water on three sides. Every location offers a different relationship with the harbor.

Nantasket Beach

Nearly a mile of east-facing beach with Boston Harbor islands — Peddocks, Lovell, Georges — visible in soft silhouette across the water. At golden hour the island shapes glow amber in backlight while the sand reflects warm light from below. The east-facing orientation means first light arrives with intensity and then softens into a long golden window. In off-season this beach is nearly empty even at midday.

Sunset Point

The harbor-facing side of Hull, where the water is calm and flat — a completely different texture from the open ocean side. Sunset Point faces west, which means evening sessions here produce warm light raking across still harbor water while the ocean side is already in shadow. Good for dogs who find the crashing surf of the Nantasket side overstimulating — the harbor side is quieter and more controlled.

Pemberton Point

The northernmost tip of the Hull peninsula, where water extends in every direction and the ferry dock adds architectural character. Pemberton Point produces the most dramatic headland composition in my South Shore portfolio — a dog silhouetted on a granite jetty with open water on three sides. Best at low tide when the jetty rocks are fully exposed. Limited foot traffic even in season.

The Backdrop Only Hull Has

I've photographed dogs at every major beach from Quincy to Plymouth. Nantasket is the only one where I routinely get asked: "Where were those taken?" The Boston Harbor islands in the background do that. They give the portrait a sense of place and scale that a featureless ocean horizon simply can't provide.

The islands aren't close — they sit 3–5 miles offshore. But at telephoto compression, they appear as soft, layered shapes just above the water line, exactly the kind of background element that makes a portrait feel like it was taken somewhere specific.

Leashes on throughout. Removed in editing. Your dog stays safe on the beach.

How It Works

01

We Talk

I learn about your dog and what kind of images you want. Harbor island backdrop on Nantasket? Calm harbor water at Sunset Point? Headland drama at Pemberton? I'll match the spot to your dog.

02

Tide & Season Timing

For reactive dogs, I'll plan an off-season early morning when Nantasket is nearly empty. For confident dogs, summer golden hour works beautifully.

03

Your Session

We meet at the chosen Hull location. 60–90 minutes at your dog's pace. Leashes stay on and come out in editing.

04

Photos on Your Wall

Gallery within 5–7 business days. We pick favorites together and create wall art for your home.

Hull Dog Photography — FAQ

Where do you photograph dogs in Hull?

Nantasket Beach is my primary Hull location — nearly a mile of east-facing beach with Boston Harbor islands silhouetted in the distance. That island backdrop is unique to Hull and unavailable anywhere else on the South Shore. Sunset Point on the harbor side gives calm flat water reflections completely different from the ocean side. Pemberton Point at the northern tip of the peninsula puts water in every direction — the most dramatic headland composition on the South Shore.

What makes Hull different from other South Shore beaches?

The Boston Harbor islands. From Nantasket Beach, the islands — Peddocks, Lovell, Georges, and Thompson — appear in the background of every portrait as soft silhouettes across the water. No other South Shore beach has this. Combined with Hull's east-facing orientation, golden hour light rakes across the sand at the same time the islands glow in warm backlight — that combination is specific to Hull and impossible to replicate elsewhere.

How much does a dog photo session in Hull cost?

Sessions start at $195. That covers your session time and a full gallery of professionally edited images. Wall art, canvas, and framed prints are available afterward. Most Hull clients invest between $800–$1,500 (~$1,200 average) in finished artwork.

Can reactive dogs do a Hull beach session?

Yes, with timing. Nantasket in July at noon is crowded and I wouldn't recommend it for reactive dogs. Nantasket on a Tuesday in October at 7am is a different experience entirely — sometimes we'll go the entire session without seeing another dog. Off-season early mornings are my recommendation for reactive dogs who want a beach session in Hull.

Do you travel to Hull for sessions?

Yes — Hull is fully within my service area. I travel there at no additional charge. The drive from Rockland is about 25 minutes.

Professional Dog Photographer · Rockland, MA · 11+ years experience

I've photographed hundreds of dogs across the South Shore and Greater Boston since 2014 — every breed, size, age, and temperament. My own rescue, Sully, was reactive and anxious when I got him, and working with him every day taught me how to photograph dogs that other photographers find difficult. I specialize in reactive and shy dogs, seniors, and memory sessions — the sessions that matter most and need the most patience.
