Why Cat Photography Is Different
Cats are not dogs, and photographing them requires a completely different approach. A dog will generally follow your lead if you've built enough trust. A cat will do exactly what a cat wants to do — and the photographer's job is to be ready when that turns into something worth capturing.
This is why almost every cat session happens in your home. Moving a cat to an unfamiliar location produces one thing: a stressed, hidden animal. In their own environment, cats eventually relax, play, perch, and reveal their actual personality. That's what we're after — not a cat that tolerates the camera, but a cat that forgets it's there.
I work quietly and at floor level when needed. I don't chase, I don't crowd, and I don't force interaction. I let your cat investigate on their terms. Some cats are bold and immediately curious about the equipment. Others take the full session to warm up, and the portraits from the last ten minutes are often the best ones.
Sessions run 45 to 90 minutes. Cats who are shy or easily overstimulated benefit from shorter sessions — I read their energy and wrap up before they hit their limit. You walk away with portraits that actually look like your cat: their eyes, their stillness, their weird specific habits that you've been trying to photograph with your phone for years.
"Chris quickly understood his personality and got beautiful shots. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a dog photographer."

About the Author
Chris McCarthyProfessional Dog Photographer · Rockland, MA · 11+ years experience
I've photographed hundreds of dogs across the South Shore and Greater Boston since 2014 — every breed, size, age, and temperament. My own rescue, Sully, was reactive and anxious when I got him, and working with him every day taught me how to photograph dogs that other photographers find difficult. I specialize in reactive and shy dogs, seniors, and memory sessions — the sessions that matter most and need the most patience.
