Five miles of barrier beach, a historic wooden bridge over tidal flats, and conservation trails with almost no foot traffic. Duxbury is built for dog photography.

I'm Chris McCarthy, a professional dog photographer based in Rockland. I've photographed dogs at Duxbury Beach and Powder Point for over a decade — from sprinting Labs to arthritic seniors who needed a slow morning walk on the flats.

Where We Photograph in Duxbury

Duxbury's geography gives us more variety than almost any other South Shore town. Here are the locations I use most.

Duxbury Beach

A five-mile barrier beach with firm sand — the best stretch for running shots on the South Shore. Long enough to always find a quiet section, even in summer. The approach from the Powder Point Bridge end gives us tidal flat reflections before we even hit the open beach. Best visited at the Gurnet Point end for late-afternoon light with the dunes at your back.

Powder Point Bridge

One of the longest wooden bridges in the US, crossing over tidal flats to the beach. At low tide, the exposed sand creates mirror-like reflections of the bridge and sky — a composition you can't find anywhere else in Massachusetts. I time sessions here for low tide within 90 minutes of golden hour for the best light-on-water combination.

Horse Pond Conservation Area

Shaded trails and a calm freshwater pond — my recommendation for dogs who aren't ready for the open beach. The pond edge gives water-oriented dogs (Labs, Goldens, Spaniels) a chance to wade without the chaos of surf. Low foot traffic even on weekends. Good fallback for dogs who find the beach's open horizon overwhelming.

The Running Shot Every Duxbury Dog Deserves

Duxbury Beach is the only location on the South Shore where I can tell a client with a high-drive dog: "Let them go." Five miles of firm, flat sand means a Lab or shepherd can sprint at full speed while I shoot from 100 feet away with a long lens. The perspective compression makes those shots look like a magazine spread.

But Duxbury is also where I do some of my most careful, slow work. Senior dogs who can barely make it to the water's edge — I've photographed them standing in the tidal shallows at Powder Point, the bridge behind them, eyes half-closed in the morning sun. Those are the shots that go above the fireplace.

The location fits the dog. I fit the approach to the dog. That's how every session works.

How It Works

01

We Talk

I learn your dog's energy level, temperament, and what you want from the session. High-drive dog? We'll plan for the beach and running shots. Arthritic senior? We'll plan for the bridge and soft morning light.

02

Tide & Light Timing

Beach sessions at Duxbury require tide coordination. I'll plan our window for low tide near golden hour — the combination that produces the best reflections and warmest light.

03

Your Session

We meet at Powder Point or the beach parking area. Sessions run 60–90 minutes. Your dog sets the pace. Leashes stay on and come out in editing.

04

Photos on Your Wall

Gallery delivered within 5–7 business days. We choose favorites together, then turn them into prints and wall art for your home.

Duxbury Dog Photography — FAQ

Where do you photograph dogs in Duxbury?

Duxbury Beach is my top choice — at five miles, it's long enough to find a quiet stretch even on busy days, and the tidal flats at the Powder Point end create mirror reflections that no other South Shore beach can match. For dogs who do better off the beach, Horse Pond Conservation Area offers shaded trails and a calm pond for water-oriented dogs who aren't ready for open surf.

Can we photograph at Powder Point Bridge in Duxbury?

Yes, and the bridge is one of my favorite compositions on the whole South Shore. The wooden bridge over the tidal flats — one of the longest wooden bridges in the US — gives us leading lines and water reflections in a single frame. Best at low tide when the flats are exposed and the water surface is calm.

How much does a dog portrait session in Duxbury cost?

Sessions start at $195. That covers your session time and a full gallery of edited images to review. Wall art, canvas, and framed prints are available after your session. Most Duxbury clients invest between $800–$1,500 (~$1,200 average) in finished artwork for their home.

My dog loves to run. Is Duxbury Beach good for action shots?

Duxbury Beach is the best location on the South Shore for running shots. The five-mile stretch means your dog can sprint in a straight line while I shoot from the side with a long lens — the perspective compression at 200mm makes those running shots look like they belong in a magazine. Flat, firm sand also means no ankle-twisting for you while you're keeping up with them.

Do you travel to Duxbury for sessions?

Yes, Duxbury is fully within my service area. I travel to your location at no additional charge. We can also use your own backyard or any private property in Duxbury if that's where your dog is most relaxed.

I've photographed hundreds of dogs across the South Shore and Greater Boston since 2014 — every breed, size, age, and temperament. My own rescue, Sully, was reactive and anxious when I got him, and working with him every day taught me how to photograph dogs that other photographers find difficult. I specialize in reactive and shy dogs, seniors, and memory sessions — the sessions that matter most and need the most patience.
