Wooded riverbanks, exposed sandbars, and freshwater pond reflections — Hanover's inland locations produce portraits that look nothing like a typical South Shore beach session.

I'm Chris McCarthy, a professional dog photographer based in Rockland. I've been photographing dogs at Hanover's rivers and conservation trails since 2014. Reactive and nervous dogs are always welcome.

Where We Photograph in Hanover

Hanover's conservation land follows the river corridors — wooded, quiet, and completely unlike a beach session.

Indian Head River

A tributary of the North River with wooded banks, exposed sandbars at low tide, and overhanging tree canopy that filters light into dappled patterns. At low tide I can position a water-oriented dog on a sandbar in the river while shooting from the bank — the water's reflection and the tree backdrop create a portrait that consistently surprises clients who expected a standard outdoor session. Best in spring and fall.

Forge Pond Park

A freshwater pond on the Hanover/Pembroke line with a loop trail and open pond edge. Morning reflections on the still water surface are clean and bright. Good for water-oriented dogs (Labs, Goldens, Spaniels) who want to wade without the tide complications of a coastal location. The wooded trail perimeter keeps the session enclosed and predictable — good for anxious dogs who find open spaces overwhelming.

North River Corridor

Wide conservation trails following the North River through Hanover with long straight sightlines. My top recommendation for reactive dogs in Hanover — wide enough that you can spot and redirect before any dog-to-dog encounter becomes unavoidable. In fall, the mixed hardwood canopy turns orange and gold and the river corridor becomes one of the most colorful inland locations in Plymouth County.

When You Want Something Other Than a Beach

Most South Shore dog photography looks the same: sandy beach, blue sky, golden retriever. That's a beautiful image. But it's also the image half your friends have.

Hanover gives me something different. The Indian Head River sandbar session I did last October — a black Lab standing in six inches of moving water with the wooded bank behind her in peak color — produced a 30x40 canvas that stopped every visitor in the client's living room. Nobody could place it. That's what inland water does that a beach can't.

All sessions run at your dog's pace. Leashes stay on and come out in editing.

How It Works

01

We Talk

I learn about your dog's temperament and what kind of images you want. River sandbar? Pond edge? Wide forest trail? I'll match the location to what your dog needs.

02

Tide & Light Timing

Indian Head River sandbar sessions require low tide coordination. I'll plan a morning window that gives us exposed sandbars in golden light.

03

Your Session

We meet at the chosen Hanover location. 60–90 minutes at your dog's pace. Leashes on, removed in post-processing.

04

Photos on Your Wall

Gallery within 5–7 business days. We pick favorites together and turn them into wall art.

"I cannot begin to describe how impressed and in love my husband and I are with Chris and his art! He showed up with a huge smile and amazing energy. Our pictures are out of this world."

Hanover Dog Photography — FAQ

Where do you photograph dogs in Hanover?

Indian Head River is my top Hanover location — the wooded riverbanks and exposed sandbars at low tide create a setting that photographs more like Vermont than suburban Massachusetts. Forge Pond Park is my recommendation for dogs who do better near freshwater — the pond edge in morning light produces clean reflections without the complexity of tidal timing. The North River corridor trails through Hanover are wide, well-maintained, and give reactive dogs the long sightlines they need.

What makes Indian Head River special for dog photography?

The Indian Head River is a tributary of the North River and has a more intimate, wooded character than the main river channel. At low tide, sandbars appear in the bends — flat, clean surfaces where a dog can stand in the water while I shoot from the bank. The overhanging tree canopy filters the light into dappled pools that are particularly beautiful in spring and fall. Very few people know about it outside Hanover, so it stays genuinely quiet.

How much does a dog photo session in Hanover cost?

Sessions start at $195. That covers your session time and a full gallery of professionally edited images. Wall art, canvas, and framed prints are available afterward. Most Hanover clients invest between $800–$1,500 (~$1,200 average) in finished artwork.

Is Hanover a good option for reactive or anxious dogs?

Yes. The North River corridor trails in Hanover are wide and straight, which means I can see other dogs and people well in advance and redirect before any interaction is required. Forge Pond Park also tends to have lower dog density than popular beach locations, and the pond setting gives nervous dogs something interesting to focus on besides passing strangers.

Do you travel to Hanover for sessions?

Yes — Hanover is fully within my service area and I travel there at no extra charge. Sessions can also be held at your home or any private property in Hanover if your dog is most comfortable on familiar ground.

I've photographed hundreds of dogs across the South Shore and Greater Boston since 2014 — every breed, size, age, and temperament. My own rescue, Sully, was reactive and anxious when I got him, and working with him every day taught me how to photograph dogs that other photographers find difficult. I specialize in reactive and shy dogs, seniors, and memory sessions — the sessions that matter most and need the most patience.
