Pet Photographer — South Shore, MA

Dogs are the specialty. But every pet deserves a great portrait — and great pet photography requires understanding how different animals behave in front of a camera.

I'm Chris McCarthy, professional pet photographer based in Rockland. I've been photographing dogs on the South Shore since 2014, and I work with cats and other pets too — always on the animal's terms, at the animal's pace.

Every Animal, the Right Approach

Different animals need different session formats. A dog session on Duxbury Beach looks nothing like a cat session in your living room — and both require real understanding of how each animal behaves.

Dogs

The primary specialty. Studio sessions at 83 E Water St Unit E328, Rockland, or outdoor sessions at beaches, parks, and trails across 20+ South Shore towns. All breeds, all ages, all temperaments — including reactive and anxious dogs.

Cats

In-home sessions only — cats photograph best in their own territory. I come to you. Sessions are paced entirely around the cat. No forcing, no rushing. A cat who needs thirty minutes to trust a stranger will produce better portraits than one who was pushed too early.

Puppies

From 8 weeks. The tiny-and-new window closes faster than most owners expect — by month four, the puppy you have right now is a different dog. Sessions at this age run 30 minutes and work with the puppy's attention span, not against it.

Senior Dogs

Unhurried sessions paced around your older dog's comfort and energy level. Shorter duration, lower-stimulation locations, and no pressure to perform. Senior dog portraits are often the most emotionally meaningful work I do.

Memory Sessions

Compassionate end-of-life photography for dogs and other pets who are ill, aging, or in their final chapter. Fast scheduling — often within 24–48 hours. These sessions are some of the most important work I do.

Other Pets

Bunnies, birds, guinea pigs, and other animals handled on a case-by-case basis. Contact me with details about your pet — species, temperament, what environment makes them comfortable — and we'll figure out a format that works.

Why a Pet-Specific Photographer Matters

A generalist photographer who "also does pets" is working from the same skill set they use for weddings and headshots — which assumes human subjects who can follow direction, hold a pose, and tolerate being told to move. None of that applies to a cat or a reactive dog.

Pet photography is a specific discipline. It requires understanding animal body language, behavior, and the exact moment before a dog looks away or a cat closes their eyes. After twelve years photographing animals specifically, I read that moment reliably.

South Shore Pet Photography is a pet portrait practice — not a generalist studio that added pets to the menu. Every session, every product, every technique is built around animals.

Pet Photography — FAQ

Do you photograph animals other than dogs?

Yes. While dogs are the primary focus, I photograph cats, bunnies, birds, and other pets. Cats are typically photographed in-home — their own territory produces far better results than an unfamiliar studio or outdoor location. Bunnies, birds, and other small animals are handled on a case-by-case basis. Contact me with details about your pet and we'll work out a session format that fits.

Can you photograph my cat?

Yes. Cat sessions are done in-home — cats are territorial and most photograph far better in their own environment than anywhere else. I'll come to you. Sessions run 45–60 minutes and work with the cat on their schedule — no forcing, no rushing. Some cats warm up in ten minutes; some need thirty. I've worked with both.

Do you work with reactive or nervous pets?

Yes. This is a specialty. Reactive dogs, nervous cats, skittish animals — all benefit from a slow, patient approach that lets them set the pace. The Rockland studio is particularly good for reactive dogs because it's a controlled environment with no unpredictable stimuli. For cats and small animals, in-home sessions serve the same purpose.

Where are pet sessions held?

Dogs: studio at 83 E Water St Unit E328, Rockland, or outdoor locations across the South Shore. Cats and small animals: in-home sessions throughout the South Shore. The right location depends on your pet — I'll recommend the setting most likely to produce great images for your specific animal.

What if my pet is shy and won't engage with a stranger?

Expected, and planned for. The first part of any session is decompression time — I let the animal set the pace, don't approach too quickly, and wait for them to come to me on their terms. Most pets relax within the first 15–20 minutes. The photos that come after that relaxation window are consistently better than anything captured in the first five minutes anyway.

How much does a pet photography session cost?

Sessions start at $195 for any pet type. Wall art, framed prints, canvas, and digital collections are available after the session. Pricing is the same whether you're photographing a golden retriever on Duxbury Beach or a Maine Coon in your living room.

Chris McCarthy

Professional Dog Photographer · Rockland, MA · 11+ years experience

I've photographed hundreds of dogs across the South Shore and Greater Boston since 2014 — every breed, size, age, and temperament. My own rescue, Sully, was reactive and anxious when I got him, and working with him every day taught me how to photograph dogs that other photographers find difficult. I specialize in reactive and shy dogs, seniors, and memory sessions — the sessions that matter most and need the most patience.
